Overview

Antonio Buero Vallejo nació en Guadalajara en 1916. Su primera vocación fue la pintura y cursó estudios de Bellas Artes en Madrid. En 1937 se alista en el ejército republicano, y terminada la guerra, es detenido y condenado a muerte por su participación en actividades clandestinas. Finalmente se le conmuta la pena por la de treinta años de cárcel, y en 1946, sale en libertad condicional. Consigue el Premio Lope de Vega en 1949 con Historia de una escalera, que es representada en el Teatro Español y con la que obtiene un rotundo éxito. Desde entonces, y pese a los problemas con la censura, los escenarios más importantes se abren al dramaturgo. Obtiene, entre otros, el Premio Nacional de Teatro en dos convocatorias sucesivas: en 1956, por Hoy es fiesta y en 1957 por Las cartas boca abajo. En 1980 se le otorga un tercer Premio Nacional de Teatro por el conjunto de su producción. En 1971 fue elegido miembro de la Real Academia, en 1986 se le concedió el Premio Cervantes y en 1996 el Premio Nacional de las Letras Españolas, ambos otorgados por primera vez a un autor teatral. De entre sus obras destacan En la ardiente oscuridad, El concierto de San Ovidio, El tragaluz o La fundación. Murió en Madrid en el año 2000.
